Since Marvel otherwise has a very high level of quality control, I don't think they're taking their fans for granted. But I suspect that they didn't take this series as seriously as the rest of their work, probably because it's animated and unlikely to affect the main timeline, even if it's technically canon.
Which unfortunately leaves this a mess, since there isn't really a point to this if they don't take it seriously. They play loose with characters and plot points, which makes it hard to feel like these are actual "what if" scenarios to the Sacred Timeline.
Instead we get: What if Steve not being Cap changed basically nothing? What if Thanos would have abandoned his mad plans if T'Challa had spent a few minutes reasoning with him? What if Doctor Strange was a completely different character? What if Vision reacted to grief just as poorly as Wanda, even though nothing in the canon suggests he would? What if Thor was an only child and also this universe ran on Looney Tunes logic? (I actually kind of buy evil Hank Pym killing all the other Avengers, oddly enough.) If you take the show as a serious part of the canon, it actually undermines the live-action stories.
